This tender novel explores the attitudes of three teenagers growing up during the '60s. At first, Sarah's anti-war efforts are largely ignored by her brother Dan, a straight-A student, and Will, their aimless best friend. It is not until the spring of their senior year that the boys confront the uncertainty of their future and the reality of the draft. At this time, Sarah proves to be an important influence: her pamphlets provide Dan with insight about the war and himself, and her emotional support and growing affection for Will helps him build self-confidence. Ultimately, Dan and Will choose very different options, yet each wins independence. Readers interested in the Vietnam War era will be pleased with the novel's authentic depiction of the times. Characterizations and historic details are drawn with precision. Although some may feel that there is not enough action, others will find a slower pace appropriate for this introspective story. Rostkowski ( After the Dancing Days ) delivers a profound, noteworthy work. Ages 12-up.
