Appalled by government apathy regarding climate change, 15-year-old Swedish activist Greta Thunberg started a protest in front of the her country's parliament building in August 2018. She criticized leaders for not doing enough to reduce carbon emissions and stood outside with the sign Skolstrejk för klimatet (school strike for the climate). Within months, Thunberg's strikes and blunt speeches to world leaders and all adults ignited a global movement, inspiring millions of people to take action worldwide.

Grades 4-7 The Gateway Biographies series (4 new titles) promises highly readable stories of some of the twenty-first century's most prominent public figures, and in that it largely succeeds. These are your classic biographies, told straightforwardly through broad, chronological narratives, progressing through landmark moments, supplemented by quotations, full-color photographs, and occasional sidebars. Greta Thunberg tells of the meteoric rise of the teen climate-change activist and her struggle to influence public opinion. Each title is well-sourced, with back matter including thorough source notes, selected bibliographies, and further-reading lists, in addition to a recap of the biography's timeline. Despite gratuitous inclusions of cyberbullying tweets aimed at Thunberg by America's forty-fifth president, these titles do a good job of distilling the stories of large figures into tightly crafted narratives. In a publishing landscape where quality nonfiction is reaching readers through exciting?especially visually?new forms, this series feels a bit like more of the same-old, but it remains a solid choice for older elementary or high/low readers embarking into the world of research.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2020, American Library Association.)
