The summer of 1995 marks Kate Colter's fifteenth year in the small town of Hayden, Wyoming. She is a woman who is generally happy in her marriage and with her now predictable day-to-day life as wife, mother, and part-time breadwinner. Even though she is a New Englander at heart, Kate has reached a point where rodeos, summer heat, sharp light, and the vast, desolate beauty of the West have become almost second nature to her. She loves her husband and daughter, is fond of her neighbors, and enjoys the company of her mother-in-law. Yet, privately, she longs for the conversations and stories of her past, and she can't help but feel disconnected from the people around her.

In walks Tom Baxter, Kate's mother-in-law's new suitor from "back East."

Kate is immediately drawn to Tom—his gentle charm and engaging conversation spark an unusual companionship. Tom seems like the little piece of home that Kate so misses. She's curious about him and about his story, but finds unexplained gaps and inconsistencies that pique her interest to a new level. Then a series of peculiar and seemingly suspicious events leads Kate to a terrifying conclusion—a conclusion that could forever shatter her life and the lives of those she loves.

In this debut novel, Dorie McCullough Lawson vividly captures a familiar American landscape. Filled with unforgettable characters and written in eloquent yet suspenseful prose, Along Comes a Stranger is a darkly humorous novel that examines the depth of identity and family life.

A bored housewife befriends a man who could be a fugitive murderer in this perplexing and clunky debut novel. (Lawson edited the anthology Posterity: Letters of Great Americans to Their Children.
) A Bowdoin-educated Bristol, Mass., native, Kate Colter never really gelled with the locals after moving with her paleontologist husband, George, and daughter, Clara, to Hayden, Wyo., George's hometown. So she spends a lot of time on the phone talking to her aunt back in Boston and observing the rituals of the American West (rodeos, parades, "Omaha Steak parties"). When she meets her mother-in-law's new boyfriend, the charming, rugged and well-read Tom Baxter, they become fast friends. But a series of coincidences leads her to suspect that Tom is actually on-the-lam Boston gangster Whitey Bulger. Lawson, the daughter of historian David McCullough, intimately understands her protagonist's displaced easterner ennui, but Kate's listlessness becomes a dulling centerpiece (a cordless phone's dying battery is prominent), and nothing happens for swaths of pages at a time. Suspense builds slowly toward an abrupt climax. Indeed, action does come to Hayden, but it takes its time getting there.

Hayden, Wyoming, is such an insignificant, isolated community that the arrival of a new person in town is a cause either for celebration or concern. When Kate Colter's widowed mother-in-law introduces her new beau, Tom Baxter, Kate, a native New Englander, is overjoyed. Despite her satisfying marriage and the rewards and concerns of motherhood, Kate has never felt totally at home in the West, and she finds in Tom a kindred spirit, due to their mutual East Coast roots as well as their love for more stimulating, intellectual conversations than the locals can provide. But when elements of Tom's story fail to add up, Kate's natural curiousity is aroused. As she delves deeper into Tom's background, Kate unwittingly puts herself and her family at risk. The daughter of historian David McCullough and author of the inspired anthology " Posterity: Letters of Great Americans to Their Children" (2004), Lawson's accomplished debut novel is an agile blend of keenly perceptive domestic drama and sharply escalating suspense.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
