The "racial reckoning" following the 2020 killings by police of African Americans, including Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, was the continuation of a centuries-long tradition of civil rights activism in the Black community. Editor Jones has assembled a resource for those wanting to learn more about African American activism, political engagement, and empowerment throughout U.S. history. The book begins with seven scholarly essays on key topics ranging from Black abolitionists' use of visual imagery as "instruments of resistance" to the role of Black women in the struggle for labor rights to Barack Obama's presidency and its legacy. The essays are followed by more than 200 entries focusing on a wide range of people, themes, organizations, and cultural aspects of the history of Black liberation. In keeping with the book's emphasis on intersectionality, entries include civil rights leaders who are often overlooked because of historical sexism and anti-LGBTQ sentiment in the movement. Each entry includes ""see also"" references and recommendations for further reading. Appendixes include annotated glossaries of civil rights organizations and of films showcasing African American activists, politicians, writers, and intellectuals, as well as a selected bibliography. As accessible as it is comprehensive, this book will be a welcome addition to public, high-school, and academic libraries.COPYRIGHT(2023) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
