From
New York Times bestseller Elle Cosimano comes Finlay Donovan Rolls the Dice—the fiercely anticipated next installment in the beloved Finlay Donovan series.
"Finlay Donovan is irresistible!"—Janet Evanovich

Finlay Donovan and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero are in sore need of a girls' weekend away. They plan a trip to Atlantic City, but odds are—seeing as it's actually a cover story to negotiate a deal with a dangerous loan shark, save Vero's childhood crush Javi, and hunt down a stolen car—it won't be all fun and games. When Finlay's ex-husband Steven and her mother insist on tagging along too, Finlay and Vero suddenly have a few too many meddlesome passengers along for the ride.
Within hours of arriving in their seedy casino hotel, it becomes clear their rescue mission is going to be a bust. Javi's kidnapper, Marco, refuses to negotiate, demanding payment in full in exchange for Javi's life. But that's not all—he insists on knowing the whereabouts of his missing nephew, Ike, who mysteriously disappeared. Unable to confess what really happened to Ike, Finlay and Vero are forced to come up with a new plan: sleuth out the location of Javi and the Aston Martin, then steal them both back.
But when they sneak into the loan shark's suite to search for clues, they find more than they bargained for—Marco's already dead. They don't have a clue who murdered him, only that they themselves have a very convincing motive. Then four members of the police department unexpectedly show up in town, also looking for Ike—and after Finlay's night with hot cop Nick at the police academy, he's a little too eager to keep her close to his side.
If Finlay can juggle a jealous ex-husband, two precocious kids, her mother's marital issues, a decomposing loan shark, and find Vero's missing boyfriend, she might get out of Atlantic City in one piece. But will she fold under the pressure and come clean about the things she's done, or be forced to double down?

The enjoyable fourth entry in Cosimano’s Finlay Donovan series (after Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun) picks up right where the previous installment left off, with the suspense novelist turned sleuth and her nanny, Vero, pausing to collect Finlay’s two young children from her ex-husband, Steven, before they head from Virginia to Atlantic City to rescue Javi, Vero’s childhood love, from loan shark Marco. During that pause, Finlay and Vero accidentally amass multiple unwanted traveling companions, including Steven, who’s angling for a reconciliation, and Finlay’s mother, Susan. To make matters worse, Marco refuses to cooperate with Finlay and Vero once they arrive in Atlantic City, and shortly after their first meeting with the loan shark, the women find him dead in a luxury casino suite. Then the police—including Finlay’s new boyfriend, Nick, and her sister, Georgia—arrive to look into Marco’s death and the disappearance of his nephew, Ike, setting off a fine farce involving interfering mothers, lost hoodies, disappearing kidnapping victims, romantic jealousy, and dirty diapers. Cosimano nails the tone—breezy but not too fluffy—and maintains a breakneck pace throughout. Readers who prefer their mysteries to lean madcap will eat this up.

Fans of Cosimano's (Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun) series in audio will be delighted to hear that Angela Dawe is back, narrating a protagonist who's matured as an amateur detective yet still finds herself in outrageous, hilarious situations. It's gratifying to see Finlay drawing on her experience in outmaneuvering threats to navigate her latest deadly adventure. This time she and her friend Vero are headed to Atlantic City with Finlay's mother and her ex-husband tagging along. They've just learned that Vero's loan shark is dead when Finlay's policeman love interest Nick and his colleagues, including a mole for the Russian mob, arrive. Soon, Finlay and Vero are dodging cops, mobsters, and Atlantic City's own criminal networks while protecting a dog in possession of vital evidence. The novel ends by closing major lingering story arcs even as it sets up a new one. At this point, no one else could give Finlay and the rest of the cast their voices like Dawe. Finlay and Vero are instantly recognizable, Zhirov and his mole have their own distinct menace, and Nick with his flirtatious smolder. VERDICT Revisiting Finlay, as performed by Dawe, is an iconic experience.--Matthew Galloway
