For a little girl named Susan, Christmas could be any other day. She doesn't believe in Santa Claus or magic or miracles of any kind. Then, one day, she meets Kris Kringle. As she doubtfully tells him which gifts she wishes for most, deep down Susan finds herself hoping that, just maybe, he is the real thing. Based on the original holiday classic, Miracle on 34th Street is a heartwarming story about generosity, imagination, and the spirit of Christmas.

The New York State Theatre Institute presents an audio theater production of the familiar Christmas story about an old man who brings the true spirit of Christmas to New York City. The production creates a rift between the listener and the story in the first crowd scenes, in which the crowd noise competes with the dialogue. Sound effects continue to dominate throughout the production, often making it difficult to distinguish among the many male characters whose voices are not distinct. The story is familiar enough that it can withstand some confusion, but this production requires undivided attention. As the package includes a study guide and suggestions for teachers, this production may be best suited to classroom use. A.F. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine

Several reissues make a reappearance this season. Leading the list is a facsimile edition of Miracle on 34th Street by Valentine Davies. The handsome volume re-creates the 1947 edition with heavy cream-colored paper and a font that emulates the original hot-metal type.
