When Jon's uncle left her and her mother his farm in the depths of the African bush, they were setting out into unknown territory in more ways than one. Luckily, they have help in the shape of their neighbour Alex Roe, who is always ready with assistance and advice—although Jon wishes he were not so arrogant and patronising! Her mother, however, finds him charming—as does the glamorous Madeleine, who is determined to persuade him to marry her.
